In this post from Seth Godin’s blog titled “The Decision Before the Decision”, he talks about how many choices we have and make about our businesses before we even start our businesses. He talks about how easy it is to get ahead of ourselves and make grandiose decisions about a business that hasn’t even made it out of our heads yet.
“A friend sent me a business plan the other day. He outlined four or five elements of the project he was launching and wanted my feedback on each.
In our haste to get started, we jump ahead.
He’d already decided to launch a project. To make it a non-profit. To build it on a scale of a million dollars a year. To do projects that would involve certain types of growth but avoid others.”

I’m reminded of a song by my favorite group, Rush, called Presto, that says;
“I’m not one to believe in magic
But I sometimes have a second-sight
I’m not one with a sense of proportion
When my heart still changes overnight.
I’m not one to believe in magic
Though my memory has a second-sight
I’m not one to go pointing my finger
When I radiate more heat than light.”
When dreaming up business plans or taking our concept to consumer, it’s easy to radiate more heat than light. It’s easy to get way ahead of ourselves. And it’s too easy to lose our sense of proportion and start thinking–and spending–BIG.
My advice to you on this How-To Tuesday is this:
Think SMALL. Act BIG.
