If you’re desperately seeking publicity for your company, product or service, look no further. I recently discovered the coolest thing called “HARO“, short for “help a reporter out”. HARO is a FREE service provided by the witty, the clever, the way cool Peter Shankman (self-described CEO, entrepreneur, adventurist).
So what is HARO? It’s a way for reporters to find killer sources and a way for sources (i.e., you & me!) to find their way into reporter’s articles. Basically, it’s like eHarmony for writers and sources.
When you subscribe to HARO, you’ll begin receiving three emails daily, full of reporter’s “queries” with all the who, what, why, when and where details.
If you see a query you’re a good match for, shoot an email to the reporter. No good fits? Have no fear, there are plenty more on the way.
As I mentioned, Peter provides the HARO service FREE and he says “the good Karma is immeasurable”. If you’re feeling the need to “thank” him for HARO, he says you can always send a donation to an animal shelter like Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. Or, you could send your donation to Nie Recovery to help a mom who really needs it.
For mompreneurs looking for a cheap & easy way to GET SOME PRESS, it doesn’t get much cheaper or easier than HARO.
As always, I welcome your questions, comments and feedback.

I found you through your post on HARO. It is very difficult to get a reporters attention or know exactly what they are looking for. HARO gives you the “in” to get free PR for your business. It is wonderful.
Heather,
I just signed up for HARO and have already found some good leads that reporters are looking for travel products to review. What is your advice when writing to these reporters? Are you writing to them in the form of a press release? What will get the most attention and want them to act on your email? Any advice would great! Thank you so much for your blog. it has been very imformative and helpful.

HI Jennifer,
I hope to cover these questions in an upcoming interview with my sister, a former news producer who received countless pitches.
You’re welcome for the blog…it’s my pleasure!
