The Mogul Mom Features…Tracy Miller Schell of Clean George

by Heather Allard on March 8, 2009

What is your name & how many children do you have?

Tracy Miller Schell —  1, 5 month old boy named Asher

What’s the name of your company and the inspiration behind it?

Clean George– Named after my dad, George.  In 2003 we found out my dad had cancer and sadly he passed that same year.  Our family learned so much during that time about the ingredients in products we use, what we eat..and how to make different choices to keep from inundating ourselves with chemicals that are linked to cancers.  Cut to 2006, I left my work on Broadway in NY to move to California and get married.  Since 2003, my lifestyle had completely changed.  I was now eating mostly organic– no more frozen white castle hamburgers for breakfast (a daily favorite), no more chemical laden products, no more microwave oven and I was driving an old mercedes that runs on vegetable oil.  I knew I wanted to start a company that made a difference and worked in conjunction with my “natural” lifestyle.  Just after moving back, my husband and I saw a child getting his hands slathered with Purell and we thought… “there’s got to be a natural alternative that doesn’t strip your hands like alcohol”.  That day I started Clean George- which is the only natural hand purifier/sanitizer without alcohol that works as a moisturizer too.  It took 2 years for formulating and testing and we launched in the summer of 08′  on Father’s Day in the Southern Pacific Region of Whole Foods and on the internet.

What is your current business struggle?

Don’t you mean… struggles with an S?!  :)   Mommy brain, finding a great sales/marketing person and extra cash for marketing.

What is your current business goal?

To donate $15,000.00 to environmental organizations in 09.  We donate 3% of profits to charity.

What one quality do you think is a “must-have” for a mom entrepreneur?

Multi-tasking!

What 1 thing or person has been very instrumental in your success?

My husband- he has wonderful ideas and is an amazing, calm and fabulous human.

What are your 3 favorite blogs?

Safemama.com, Gorgeously Green and seriously… TheMogulMom.com  :)

What is your favorite quote?

“This too shall pass”… my mom says it to me whenever I’m in a jam.

What advice would you give to a new mom entrepreneur?

Do a business plan for sure and keep going back to it and updating it- and- don’t hold yourself back by trying to make things “perfect” initially, things will evolve and change as you go,  so be flexible and “perfection” happens on its own.  Oh yes, and it’s great to connect with other moms doing the same thing!

How can we connect with you? (Email, Twitter, Facebook, The H.O.D., website, etc.)
