The Mogul Mom Features…Jackie Levine from Baby Steps

by Heather Allard on May 9, 2009

jack_jill47sWhat is your name & how many children do you have?

Jackie Levine–I have 2 children, 3 and 6 years old.

What’s the name of your company and the inspiration behind it?

Baby Steps.  My partner (Jill Tanner) and I wanted to give mom’s something that we wished we had: great developmental toys and informative (but short) developmental information to better understand our new babies.

What is your current business struggle?

MARKETING. I have a day job and two kids and with an on-line business it’s all about web marking, outreach, getting reviewed and getting the word out. If only I had all the time in the world I know I could push this business into success, but I have to start small and do the best I can. So, I really think Mogul Mom is a great start and the push I need to get going – you make it easy, user friendly and it doesn’t feel  competitive. There is room for all of us mogul moms! Right?! (Right! :) )

What is your current business goal?

Right now we want to move some of our product. Because we sell kits and all of our toys are made in the USA, our product is not on the lowest end price wise. So, we want to get the word out and sell so we can get responses and better our business and products.

What one quality do you think is a must-have for a mom entrepreneur?

Tenacity and a positive attitude. I come from the film business and I love what the late Dawn Steel said in her book (not an exact quote but you get the jest) – First try the front door, if you can’t get in try the back door, if no one answers, try the side door, the windows but don’t give up!

What 1 thing or person has been very instrumental in your success?

My tenacity and instincts have worked well in my professional life, I apply these same skills to my business and hopefully with more time to devote to Baby Steps it will grow.

What are your 3 favorite blogs?

Mogul Mom, Nikki Finke’s Deadline Hollywood Daily and Ideal Bite

What is your favorite quote?

“Never give up”

What advice would you give to a new mom entrepreneur?

Be specific about your product, your market and have a marketing plan.

How can we connect with you?

By email or on our website.

I could’ve said the exact same thing about marketing and getting the word out. It’s so hard to find enough time when you are taking care of kids, the business, the household…… Best of luck to you, Jackie!

I couldn’t agree with you more on two points–marketing/exposure a challenge and never, never give up!

Thanks for sharing Jackie.
