The Mogul Mom Features…Jamie Bird of MiniMe BabyGear

by Heather Allard on June 7, 2009

jamiebirdWhat is your name & how many children do you have?

My name is Jamie Bird, and I have two little boys Kayden and Bryce.

What’s the name of your company and the inspiration behind it?

The name of my company is MiniMe BabyGear. I started as MiniMe Embroidery, but soon changed it after a few family members had a hard time spelling embroidery.  I simply adore handmade, and love anything and everything baby related. I carry boutique items that are as useful as they are beautiful.

What is your current business struggle?

My current struggle is balance. I take on too many projects, and get overwhelmed when they all need attention at once.

What is your current business goal?

My current business goal is obtaining more website traffic. My husband is a teacher, so I plan on devoting serious time to it this summer.

What one quality do you think is a “must-have” for a mom entrepreneur?

I hate to be cliche, but you have to have passion. You have to love what you do, otherwise you will burn out quick.

What 1 thing or person has been very instrumental in your success?

This might sounds cheesy, but my understanding spouse! I cannot tell you how often work interferes, especially when it is a home based business. I am thankful I have a husband who is willing to go to the post office daily, work late at night with me to meet deadlines, and listen as I obsess about something that probably makes little sense to him.

What are your 3 favorite blogs?

The Atypical Life, Popshopology, Seth Godin’s Blog and I love getting The Mogul Mom e-mails.

What is your favorite quote?

‘The heights by great men reached and kept were not attained by sudden flight, but they, while their companions slept, were toiling upward in the night.’ –Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

What advice would you give to a new mom entrepreneur?

I think one of the most helpful things is finding a friend (or a few friends) in the same general industry, around the same business size.

I have eight people that I am in contact with at least once a week, sometimes daily, and it has made this journey more enjoyable. Having them to share ideas, prototypes, press leads, sources, or even just words of encouragement has been invaluable.

Thanks for sharing your story, Jamie! Did you notice that you and Alice have the same favorite quote? What are the odds that the same quote would come up twice in 48 hours?! Amazing. :) Heather

Hi Jamie, when Heather told me that we shared the same quote I was very surprised, because all along I always thought I was the only one with such a special quote :) Not so at all, isn’t it amazing that you are thousands of miles away from me, we never met yet we share something really wonderful–talk about the universe bringing people together. Look for me to add your company to my living in durham blog, http://livingindurham.wordpress.com and Jamie I wish you all the best with your business! Keep in touch.

Thank you very much, LeNesha. I appreciate your encouragement. I took a look at your blog- what a great resource and excellent idea! I look forward to reading more, and am intrigued by what you are inventing:-)

Alice, I have never heard anyone use that quote before, either! Very small world, indeed. Thank you for adding me, I will add you as well. I wish you luck with your journey!
