Mom Entrepreneur Annette Frey of Biscuits by LambchopWhat is your name & how many children do you have?

Annette Frey with one girl, Starlet — with 4 legs, and paws, who woofs and howls!

What’s the name of your company and the inspiration behind it?

Biscuits by Lambchop–the inspiration behind the company was my dog Lambchop. When he developed kidney disease, in addition to multiple food allergies, I learned to cook a customized and balanced diet for him. With no treats on the market that met his special dietary needs, I took to the kitchen again, testing dozens of recipe variations. Defying the science of baking, I developed a recipe free of gluten, wheat, eggs and dairy (all staples in baking but also common canine food allergens), while limiting fat, sodium and phosphorus (to support Lambchop’s kidneys and pancreas conditions), and, most importantly remaining delicious! When his canine friends with allergies tolerated his treats exceptionally well, we decided they had to be shared with dogs everywhere. (Note from The Mogul Mom: I just had to post the video of Lambchop riding on a motorcycle sidecar…it’s adorable!)

What was your start-up cost (rough estimate) and when did your company become profitable?

Under $10k. Although the business has supported itself since early on, we are just now on the cusp of profits!

What is your current business struggle?

Decreased sales in this challenging economy, and marketing challenges. Re-branding and website re-design will be followed by new marketing efforts, with hiring a professional on the wish list.

What is your current business goal?

Biscuits by Lambchop is in the process of re-branding the company and product logos followed by a great new website re-design with streamlined e-commerce and a monthly biscuit club, making the purchasing process seamless for our valued customers, while attracting new site traffic and sales.

I’m passionate about the well being of all dogs and am creating a community where their caretakers can look, listen, ask and learn. My new weekly Dog Chat features guest speakers on various canine/pet topics. I hope all dogs benefit from their caretaker’s participation in this fun, informative and interactive forum

What is your favorite business book or website? Why?

I am currently reading The Toilet Paper Entrepreneur by Mike Michalowicz and loving it! Sage and realistic advice, with a great sense of humor.

What is your favorite quote?

Nothing in life is to be feared. It is only to be understood.- Marie Curie

Who is your business idol?  Why?

Betsey Johnson because she follows her own rules, is true to her brand while successfully transcending it through the times, for over 40 years! Betsey is always looking and moving forward, never dwelling on the moment’s challenges for long. She is an innovator, an icon and a survivor.

What advice would you give to a new mom entrepreneur?

Schedule a regular block of time to spend on your business. Be realistic and set a goal you can meet and that meets your business needs.
