I’ve posted a couple of things from Chris Brogan’s blog in the past, but probably haven’t given him the props he’s due. Chris is from my neighboring state of Massachusetts and is a marketing & social media whiz with both substance and style. He also happens to be a husband and a dad. Someday, I’d love to work for Chris Brogan.
I loved this post of his about “presence management” and the daily effort it takes to create and maintain an online/social media presence–Chris breaks it down into nice, neat “to-do” lists organized by the “big four” that Jennifer Fong has talked about many times–Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and blogs. As mom entrepreneurs, we may be too busy to do all of Chris’s to-do’s, but if we make a noble effort to do at least some of them, we’ll be way ahead of the pack.
If you’re looking to establish your online presence, and build relationships, it’s not the kind of project where you show up, build your profiles, friend a few people, and call it good. It’s a lot like tending the farm. Here are seven particular “chores” you could do every day that should prove beneficial to your online interests.
1. Find seven things worth retweeting in your general feed and share.
2. Reply to at least five things with full responses (not just “thanks”).
3. Point out a few people that you admire. It shows your mindset, too.
4. Follow back at least 10 folks. (I use an automated tool, but this is a personal preference. If you want such, I use SocialToo.)
5. 10 minutes of just polite two-way chit chat goes far.
6. Check in on birthdays on the home page. (Want a secret? Send the birthday wish via Twitter or email. Feels even more deliberate.)
7. Respond to any comments on your wall.
8. Post a status message daily, something engaging or interesting.
9. Comment on at least seven people’s status messages or updates.
10. Share at least 3 interesting updates that you find.
11. If you belong to groups or fan pages, leave a new comment or two.
12. Accept any invitations that make sense for you to accept.
13. Enter any recent business cards to invite them to LinkedIn (if you’re growing your network).

I love this post by Chris Brogan! I actually Re-Tweeted it a few days ago. I think there is a lot to be said for being authentic online and taking the time to get to know your online audience and connections.

I love it too, Holly. You’re right–if we’re going to make these connections, let’s be authentic and nurture them.

These are great tips, I am registered with LinkedIn but really don’t have enough business contacts for it to beneficial at this time at least that is what I understand.
I read the rest of the tips as Chris’s blog, tried to comment but I guess they are closed.
