WeÂ had the good fortune to interview Marie Forleo about moms who are thinking about enrolling inÂ B-SchoolÂ while trying to run a business, raise a family and rock both. Iâm thrilled to share her advice (that last one gave me chills!) with you below.
TMM:Â Marie, trying to build a business while raising a family is a completely different ballgame than trying to build a business as a solo entrepreneur.

TMM:Â I often hear from readers,Â âIâm not there yet âŚ.Iâm not ready to invest, to hire, to really learn how to do this business thing.â What would you say to those mom entrepreneurs who simply think âIâll do it next yearâŚ.Iâm not ready yetâ?
Marie:Â ThereâsÂ a secret that every successful mom mogul knows that wannabes donât. That secret is this: youâll never âfeel readyâ to do the work you were born to do.
The worldâs happiest and most successful moms never âfeel readyâ to make a bold move â they just GO. They understand that waiting to âfeel readyâ before taking action is like waiting for Queen Elizabeth to willfully step down from the throne. Ainât gonna happen.
Waiting until you âfeel readyâ is a cop out. Itâs a time-sucking, dream-killing excuse rooted in fear, designed to keep us stuck in the mediocrity of the masses.
Talk to anyone at the top of their game and youâll hear something like this. âWhen I got started, I was a mess. I had no idea what I was doing, I just kept putting stuff out there. After a while, everything came together.â
TMM:Â We moms haveÂ nooooÂ problem buying our kiddos everything under the sun, but when it comes to spending money on our businesses, we suddenly get ‘shallow pockets’.
Why is is so important for moms to invest in their business? How can moms âjustifyâ spending money on their business and on programs like B-School?
Marie:Â One of the most powerful things Iâve ever heard is if you think education is expensive, try ignorance. Because in business and life, YOU are your most valuable asset. The only way you can grow your income and impact is if you grow as a person. Whether itâs through B-School or some other educational opportunity, donât ever underestimate the ROI of you.
TMM:Â As I mentioned, we mogul moms are burping babies and taming hormonal teens while trying to run and grow our businesses â how much time will moms need to spend on B-School? And, we all know poop happens â is B-School a âbe there or be squareâ type of program, or can we go at our own pace?
Marie:Â In B-School, you can go at your own pace, plus you have lifetime access to the program. Hereâs what B-Schooler mom named Laura said who is raising 3 small kids while sheâs running her wildly profitable online business:

As wonderful as earning a creative living and being your own boss is, the life as a professional or semi-pro photographer can be tough sometimes. Even when youâre doing everything right, youâre still apt to suffer some slow times. Without steady, guaranteed revenue to count on, even the best of the best can find themselves strapped for cash every now and then.
But, if youâre like many other creative souls, you arenât doing this just for the money. Youâre doing it because you canât not do it. For you, this is more than a desire, itâs who you are. Making a living from ‘passionate pursuitsâ can sometimes be difficult, but thereâs hope. And that hope comes in the form of multiple streams of income.
The former financial advisor in me urges you to think of these strategies as you would a diversified investment portfolio. Because youâve expounded upon your offerings, youâve always got something going.

Some of the most popular sources of supplemental income are known as âevergreen productsâ. These digital offerings are ever-present, enduring sources of income that are readily available for purchase online, 24/7.
The best part is, this sort of offering can be sold over and over again, requiring little or no additional time or money investment from you.
2. Selling Prints
From beginner to expert, lots of smart photographers augment their income by selling prints of their own, original work, both online and in person.
3. Selling Tangible Items
Beyond offering prints, there are other ways to get your work into the hands of customers. Selling tangible goods allows you to turn your work into physical products and sell them to your fans.

Photography actions are a series of digital editing steps that help you achieve a unique finishes for your work. They’re truly are an editorial blessing, as they help bring your creative vision to fruition. Adobe offers a âmemoryâ feature so you can replicate a particular finish time and again. Automating the process will help lessen the time spent editing and release you from the tedium of manually going through the steps again and again for each image. 10. Go On Assignment
As a professional, youâve got a knack for capturing beauty, and that doesnât go unnoticed. As a commissioned freelancer, clients hire you to take images of a subject of their choosing, usually giving you creative reign to deliver a result theyâll love. Theyâve likely chosen you based on the work theyâve seen you do, so just go out there and do your thing. Freelance work is nice because it gets you some extra practice behind the lens and encourages you to stretch your creative muscles.

So… Which of these methods are you going to try first?
I was having coffee with another female founder and the conversation turned to the sweat equity our friends had put into each of our companies. In fact, one of my friends was with me for this chat; she had flown in from another country to help me out with the company I recently founded, Maven Women.
My fellow âfemmepreneurâ couldnât have said it better. Having wonderful, brilliant, and loyal girlfriends may be one of the most important ingredients of a successful business. It has certainly been essential for me.
The sweat equity of friends is often unparalleled and one of the best form of startup capital.
My girlfriends are members of focus groups, product testers, editors and proofreaders, troubleshooters, and donors of a wide range of talents. Five of my girlfriends modeled for our initial photoshoot, our photographer is a close friend of mine, and our shootâs hairstyles were done by another talented friend. This labor of love shone through in the beautiful pictures, which embody Maven Womenâs values in a way they never could have without personally knowing the models. Their engagement created imagery which says something entirely different than the traditional fashion shoot that is lacking in personality, heart, and relatability.
Friends are often the greatest champions for your business.
Often the first people who will bet on your product or service and then spread the word are those loyal friends who have been betting on you time and time again, through all of lifeâs twists and turns. My girlfriends have not just supported our presales through their own purchases but spread the word through word of mouth, e-mail, social media, and more. They connect me with anyone they meet who may be a helpful contact and sing my praises often better than I could myself, seeing the best in me when I may be most uncertain. They are my greatest champions, and their efforts have been more successful than any other marketing campaign Iâve put forth so far.
The talent and brainpower of friends is priceless.
Many women in entrepreneurship are socially conscious pragmatists, creating the product or service they wanted themselves but couldnât find. Resulting, their girlfriends are often in their customer demographic. I had a friend who is a whiz with color help me select our initial fabric colors, using survey feedback from a wide range of other friends to help.
Another friend who is a textile expert who helped me select the perfect match for our beautiful dresses. My friends have been brilliant with strategy and troubleshooting, often bringing in game-changing ideas that resulted in wise pivots large and small. They arenât in the daily mess and muck of the company so they are dedicated without being myopic, offering a necessary outside perspective.
Friends provide the invaluable emotional support necessary to take the leap into entrepreneurship.
You canât go into entrepreneurship without having dark days. Financial uncertainty, self-doubt, constantly evaluating whether to pivot or stay the course, and long hours take a heavy toll on even the most balanced women. Entrepreneurship can become all-consuming indefinitely. My friends play a critical role of pulling me into reality and a more balanced life. They also give me that much needed confidence boost that ameliorates the self-doubt so many femmepreneurs suffer from.
True friends can help you understand your strengths and compliment and encourage you, while also being candid with you about areas to improve or blind spots. They are constantly checking on me to see how Iâm doing, and those who also work in entrepreneurship or have jobs with a high level of uncertainty and responsibility have provided a tremendous solidarity.
When one of my best friends saw the initial drawings for our first collection she candidly told me that she was impressed and they were better than she expected. She could see that this was bringing out my visually creative side that I had neglected for over a decade when I was in the worlds of law and nonprofit management. I was truly using a nascent gift, and it was an affirmation that this was in fact a wise career choice for me to embark upon.
It takes a village to launch a successful business.
I couldnât do it without the tremendous help and support of my friends, and I try and find ways to constantly thank them for all they do for me. There is truly no way I can ever properly say than you. Many friends have told me that my work has inspired them to take professional or personal leaps and needed more courage or an additional dose of discipline to take on.
Iâve also tried to encourage friends who have talents and skills Iâve engaged in Maven Women, as some of them didnât realize how gifted and unique they are. I also try and pay it forward, providing advice and support during their challenging times where I can and being an incredibly committed pro bono volunteer for their causes and endeavors.
And thatâs what life is all about: those beautifully symbiotic relationships that are win-wins for all, where women bring out the best in each other and provide encouragement to live out their dreams.

Women have a vested interest in changing the ratio of female leaders in our country, whether it is in business or in government. And for women in leadership roles, they need to do their part. There is power in numbers, and the effect of having role models in numbers canât be overestimated. Huffington Post Women published the results of research done on the West Bengal of India. In that region, there have been quotas in place for female politicians since 1993. The research found that in areas with long-serving female leaders, the gender gap in teen education goals disappeared. Parents and teens alike began setting more ambitious education goals for themselves and their daughters. Seeing women in charge changes perceptions by women and men alike. Ambitions and expectations change.
If you are in a position of power, you have a unique opportunity to help other women. Â Sallie Krawcheck, one of the top women on Wall Street and former head of wealth management at both Citigroup and Merrill Lynch, is putting her name and influence behind an investment vehicle that will direct assets to companies who put women in leadership positions.
Women often work behind the scenes. Because we naturally focus on what needs to be done, rather than being noticed, women often do not get the recognition they deserve. If you are in a position of power, it means people are already listening to you. Use that power to recognize the good work of other women, in front of everyone, especially men. When they realize how these talented women can help them achieve their goals, they will be motivated to recruit and promote them. And so the movement toward the creation of critical mass begins.
Letâs also use our power to keep up-and-coming female leaders in the workforce. I see many women opt out of the workplace at the point in their lives when they start families. I understand that itâs hard to have the time and energy to do it all. But when they leave the business world, we all lose. We lose the thought leadership of these smart, talented women and our companies are the worse for that.
These women who opt out of the workforce also lose, if not now, then later in life. How many times have you seen it? A friend or acquaintance who left the business world to raise a family ten, fifteen, or twenty years ago is now at a crossroads and doesnât know what to do. Perhaps the kids have gone off to college or the marriage is at an end. The woman either wants or needs to rejoin the workforce. But itâs impossible for her to return to where she left off. In fact, she may not get back into her field at all. She is left without power and without a choice she wants.
All leaders in positions of power can change this. You should want to change this and feel a responsibility to do so. It is not easy. Your organization can create flexible schedules, job sharing, and other opportunities to support working parents. Help create a workplace that makes it more possible for women to maintain their careers and care for their families. Letâs keep our female talent growing and build the pipeline for women in leadership positions.
Figure out whatâs worked for you in your own career and pass that knowledge onto another female. Reach out to a female peer who seems to be struggling or could be even better and more effective with a little advice. You donât have to tell her exactly what to do. You only need to share your own personal stories.
Consider mentoring a new female graduate or a young female professional to increase her odds of growing up to be a successful leader. Somebody, man or woman, took a chance on you. Someone invested discretionary time in you. You need to do the same: Take a chance on, and invest in, someone else. As an experienced female leader, you have the unique perspective on what it will take for that young woman to be successful. Donât keep it a secret. Share the knowledge that creates power and critical mass.
Be a catalyst. That knowledge is like a fine piece of jewelry that doesnât do anyone any good hidden in the drawer. Get it out and share it with someone who will benefit from it.

It happens to the best of us. You type in a URL or follow a link to a page you’re ready to visit, then BAM. You’re hit with a roadblock; the dreaded 404 error page.
What is a 404 page, anyway?
A 404 page is a virtual roadblock of sorts. Website hosting servers typically generate a 404 (or ‘Not Found’) webpage any time a browser attempts to follow a dead or broken link. Sometimes this is due to a moved or deleted page, a mistyped link, or an attempt to visit a page that never existed.
Most standardÂ 404 pagesÂ contain limited information, leaving a visitor feeling disappointed, lost, and without the information they came to your site looking for. Often they’ll leave your website and return to Google to find another source.Â And that’s never a good thing.
But you can capture the attention (and even the hearts) of your misguided visitors with an engaging 404 page – one that gives them some options, all of which have potential to benefit you and your business. And best of all it’s quick, easy, and free.
How to create a custom 404 page
If you’re not handy with code, you can hire someone to develop a unique 404 page for you, or, if you’re on WordPress.org you can do it yourself for free in about 10 minutes with a plugin.
There are several plugins out there to choose from. After doing some research on my own, I chose the free version of FortyFour.
Why I love this plugin
- It’s $0 (you can upgrade to pro, but for now, the free version has all I need).
- All 404 links visited on your sites are available on Appearance > 404 Page: Logs. Just head over there to see your 404 links and how many times the pages were viewed.
- It’s light-weight, meaning it won’t take up a lot of space or slow the page load time down. It doesn’t load the unnecessary scripts, css, images and other links to 404 page.
- It’s super easy to use. Make changes to your page in minutes, all from one dashboard.
Here’s how to make the magic happen:
1. Get the Plugin
Download and install the free FortyFour plugin.
2. Set it up
On the left sidebar, scroll down to Appearance. In the dropdown you’ll see 404 Page there. Click on it and it’ll open to something that looks something like this:
3. Customize It
You can easily change and edit your copy as you would on any other post or page in this area. For best results, make sure to keep it in line with your brand persona. Be creative. Write something that encourages clicking. You can invite them to visit other pages, take them to your blog, or even send them off to another landing page of your choice. Whatever you decide to write, make it efficient. Just a few sentences will do; You won’t have their attention for long.
*Note that this plugin automatically adds a link that lets visitors click their way to your home page, so there’s no need to include that option in your text.
Scroll down on the same page to customize text appearance and color, link color, etc.
4. Add an image
With this plugin, you’re able to choose between a solid background or an image. I highly recommend opting for the image. AÂ captivating stock image is far more likely to grab and hold your visitors’ attention than a plain backdrop alone. As Kissmetrics puts it, “People no longer want to browse a website â they want to experience it.”

Pro tip: Go toÂ Unsplash.com and type ‘add typography’ in the searchbar and you’ll be gifted with plenty of images that have been kind enough to leave space for your text. This won’t work on most other stock image sites.
5. Get ready to share it with the world
You can view your page intermittently as you work by hitting Publish in the upper right hand corner, then clicking View 404 page. This will open to a live preview of what your visitors will see.
