It’s Hip to Square Up

What if you could slip a little gadget in your pocket, magically attach it to your smart phone and get paid for goods and services, no matter where you are?

No, this isn’t a sci-fi fantasy. There really is such a thing.

It’s called Square Up and it allows you to process all major credit cards from anywhere.

When you sign up to Square Up, you’ll receive a little (free) card reader that plugs into your smart phone, iPad or iPod touch. Then, download the app to your phone or mobile device. When you’re ready to accept a payment, just click the Square Up reader to your phone, log into the app and you’re all set to get paid!

We love Square Up because it makes it easy and affordable to accept credit card payments, without having to set up a merchant account.

And, it allows you to get paid even when you’re at:

  • Craft fairs and trade shows
  • Trunk shows or home parties
  • Anywhere you might sell your goods or services.

What’s the catch, you ask? Nothing, unless you consider the very reasonable 2.75% fee Square Up charges on all completed transaction a catch.

Let’s look at the benefits:

  • Works with iPhone, iPod Touch, Android phones and iPad devices (not Blackberry yet. We know; that does suck).
  • Transaction fees are taken out immediately so there are no bills to pay
  • Your money is sent to your bank account on the next business day
  • You can access the Square Up app via 3G/4G or secure Wifi, from anywhere

Drawbacks to Square Up? Ummm…..none!

It’s hip to be square.

Where are you going to use Square Up? Tell us in the comments.

I had a nightmare with Square. They are not a true merchant account provider but pretend to be one. My first $500 sale went through fine. Did another for $1200 and another for $2144 and it has been over 60 days with no response from Square. They held my funds and that is when I realized that there are real merchant account providers out there that charge less and do not hold your money indefinitely. If you do a quick Google search on Squareup, you’ll see that they are on ripoffreport.com and many other sites with thousands of other Square users having the same issues. If you run a real business, Square is not for you. Stay far away from Square unless you got money to burn, is my recommendation.

My acupuncturist started using this and it was great! Loved it! I think it’s really perfect for yoga teachers, pilates teachers and personal trainers…great way to sign people up on the spot! Plus, you get to send them a receipt by email right away.

Great tool for small biz owners and service professionals!

I just saw them for sale at Target, in the electronics department, or if you have an Apple store near you, you can usually pick it up there as well, if you are worried about delivery. Ours came within a week of ordering it through the website, though.

The app is pretty user-friendly, and customers think it’s really cool. We did find that the iPad app was a little different, and we personally prefer the iPhone app, but that’s just us.

Love Square! Offering my customers the ability to pay with their debit and credit cards has really added credibility to my very small business. The portability is fabulous and my money is always in my account within 2 business days. So awesome.

We have used Square for over a year at our trade shows & we love it!! I do agree with James that you need to keep it dust free, as well as the headphone jack in your phone. We love the convenience and portability of Square, their customer service is awesome & FAST, and the fees are very reasonable. We highly recommend it!!

The Square service is awesome! However, I wouldn’t recommend that you just slip it in your purse or pocket. You must keep in mind that like those credit card terminals found at retail stores, the Square has a small magnetic head built into it that can be compromised by dirt, dust, moisture and other everyday contaminants. These contaminants can cause the Square unit to misread cards. Yes, you can get another one should you contaminate the head beyond repair. But manually keying in the card info while you are waiting for a replacement can be tedius and it will rasise your rate to process the transaction. Solution? Keep the unit clean and free of those contaminants. Get a carry case for the Square that will keep it impervious to dirt, dust and moisture.
